On September 16-17,2017, the Basel Open Masters, the largest international karate tournament in Switzerland was held. 20 nations and more than 700 startes from all over the world showed high-ranking kata’s and attractive kumite competitions during two days. There were big well-known names from the international karate world registered:
- Karate superstar Rafael Aghayev from Azerbaijan (multiple European and world champion)
- English World Champion Thomas Jordan
- Vice World Champion Aykhan Mamayev from Azerbaijan
- Ukrainian European Champion Iryna Zaretska
- Turkish Vice European Champion Gökhan Gunduz
- European Junior Champion Dacosta Steven from France
- European Junior ChampionPolina Hurenko from Ukraine,

On Saturday, various karate disciplines at the highest level were admired throughout the entire day of the competition. The highlight of the tournament was the Master category, in which the best of the best competed against each other. The multiple world champion Rafael Aghayev showed speed, fighting strength and proved his mastery. Iryna Zaretska’s fighting spirit and absolute precision are the main features of the women’s competition. Murat Sahin also achieved a great success in the men’s event, finishing third in the men’s competition.

- England: 12 Gold, 16 Silver, 16 Bronce
